Bearing false witness, or speaking falsely about others, is so harmful that it is directly prohibited in the Bible as one of God’s Ten Commandments: “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour” (Exodus 20:16, WEB). This commandment emphasizes our words’ profound impact, urging us to speak truthfully and kindly at all times.

The Power of Our Words
Our words carry great power—they can uplift, heal, and encourage, or hurt and destroy. The Bible warns against bearing false witness: "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour" (Exodus 20:16).
Even simple gossip or careless words can damage trust and relationships. On the other hand, truthful and kind speech builds unity, respect, and connection.
Consequences of False Witness
Scripture makes it clear that dishonesty has consequences. Proverbs 19:9 says, "A false witness will not go unpunished."
Lying harms others and also damages our own character, relationships, and connection with God.
Accountability for Our Words
Jesus taught that our words matter deeply:
"Every idle word… will be accounted for" (Matthew 12:36)
Our speech reflects our hearts. What we say reveals who we are.
The Call to Speak Wisely
God calls us to speak with wisdom and kindness:
"A gentle tongue is a tree of life…" (Proverbs 15:4)
Choosing our words carefully helps build others up instead of tearing them down.
Drawing Closer to God
When we grow closer to God, our words begin to reflect His character. Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us to trust Him and follow His guidance.
Through prayer, Scripture, and spiritual growth, our speech becomes more truthful, compassionate, and uplifting.
